IEA Fitness Test

This page explains the fitness test for the Immigration Enforcement Agent (IEA) for the Office of Detention and Removal (DRO). Prior to administering the IEA Fitness Test, read the Administrator Instructions and Fitness Fact Sheet provided in the links to the right.

The three (3) components of the IEA Fitness Test are as follows and must be administered in this order offering a 3-minute rest period between each test. The provided IEA/DRO audio CD MUST be used for the administration of this test.

Test administrators will simulate all required movements. Practice the demonstrations you are to perform in order to familiarize yourself completely with all testing requirements.

1. Kneel/Stand

Successful Completion: Examinee completes ten (10) position changes in 25 seconds AND maintains upright bilateral kneeling position for 2 minutes standing afterward without assistance/postural deviation.

Protocol:

  1. Examinee begins the test in lying in a prone position on the floor with arms directly along side of the body.
  2. Next, the examinee comes to an upright position on the knees with thighs and upper body vertical. Leaning, forward or backward, is not permitted.
  3. The examinee will then grip their dominant hand with the non-dominant hand (as if firing a semi-automatic pistol). Both arms should be extended horizontally with elbows fully extended and locked at eye level. Examinee will keep their index finger (as if it were a gun barrel) pointed at the middle of the test administrator's chest.
  4. Examinee will assume an upright standing position.
  5. Next, the examinee will then assume a right knee kneeling position (half kneeling), then return upright.
  6. The examinee will then alternate knees and assume an upright kneeling position on their left knee and then return upright.
  7. Next, the examinee will assume a full-kneeling position (either knee first) and then return to an upright position.
  8. The examinee will then return to the full kneeling position (either knee first) and hold a full kneeling upright position for two (2) minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: The examinee's arms must remain extended, horizontal to the floor with the elbows locked and the index finger pointed at the middle of the test administrator's chest throughout all of the kneeling and standing movements. Their arms should relax only when instructed to do so at the end of the test.

The following are examples of reasons a candidate would fail the Kneel Stand test.

  1. Examinee is unable to complete the first 10 position changes in 25 seconds.
  2. Double kneeling position not held for two (2) minutes.
  3. Failure to maintain proper position throughout the entire testing process (i.e. sitting back on heels, bending elbows, arm movements that result in aiming outside the target area).

2. Push-ups

Successful Completion: Examinee completes 15 proper form push-ups in 2 minutes.

Protocol:

  1. Proper form push-ups require both men and women to begin the test in the "up position" with the elbows locked and hands shoulder width apart, body straight and feet close together.
  2. On the command "Go", the examinee will drop their straightened body until the sternum (breast bone) touches the foam block provided.
  3. The examinee then is to return to the "up position" while maintaining a straight body.

The following are examples of push-ups that are not proper form and will not be counted:

  1. Examinee has a sagging back
  2. Examinee has raised buttocks.
  3. Examinee has feet spread wide.
  4. If the examinee does not return to the full "up position".
  5. If the examinee allows only the breast tissue to touch the foam block or they don't touch the foam block at all.
  6. If an examinee's knees touch at any time during the push-up test - the test is over.

3. Step Test

Successful Completion: Examinee maintains the stepping cadence of up, up, down, down as indicated on the IEA/DRO audio for the entire the 5-minute test.

Protocol:

  1. Allow the examinee to practice stepping on and off the bench while in cadence with the provided IEA/DRO audio.
  2. After the practice stepping, the test administrator must maintain the stepping cadence on the floor while standing next to the examinee for the start of the test.
  3. The step test begins with the examinee standing in front of the step platform and stepping onto the platform with their lead foot first when the cadence audio track begins. Then they will step up with the other foot and then down with the lead followed by the other foot.
  4. The stepping cadence will continue for the five minute duration in conjunction with the cadence audio track provided.
  5. Examinees are not required to change lead feet during the step.

The following are reasons to fail an examinee during the step test:

  1. Failure to step for the entire duration of the 5-minutes.
  2. Examinee unable to maintain a stepping cadence in accordance to the cadence audio track provided for more than 2 CONSEQUTIVE SEQUENCES (up, up, down, down, is one sequence).
  3. Examinee unable to maintain a stepping cadence of up, up, down, down for a total of 6 CADENCE SQEUENCES during the 5-minute test.
  4. Examinee pushes on the legs to assist them in the stepping action.
