CBPO Fitness Test

This page explains the fitness test for the Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO). Prior to administering the CBPO Fitness Test, read the Administrator Instructions and Fitness Fact Sheet provided in the links to the right.

The three (3) components of the CBPO Fitness Test are as follows and must be administered in this order offering a 3-minute rest period between each test. The audio file provided in the link to the right must be used for the administration of this test.

Test administrators will simulate all required movements. Practice the demonstrations you are to perform in order to familiarize yourself completely with all testing requirements.

PART I:

1. Sit-ups

Protocol:

  1. Explain that this is a timed test, requiring the candidate to complete twenty (20) proper form sit-ups in sixty (60) seconds. If needed, rest between sit-ups must be taken in the “up position” but the audio must continue.
  2. The test administrator must hold the candidate’s feet during the test with the test administrator’s hands.
  3. The candidate will assume the starting or “down position” on his/her back with shoulder blades touching the mat with the knees bent at a 90-degree angle and feet are flat. Hands are behind the head without fingers interlocking. Thumbs are beside ears and elbows are extended to sides.
  4. The candidate is required to sit-up until the elbows touch the knees or elbows break the plane of the knees. Return to the starting position for one complete sit-up.
  5. Count aloud all proper form sit-ups. Inform the candidate immediately if he/she has displayed incorrect form, but encourage them to continue until the time is up.
  6. The Sit-up Test will stop:
    1. When the candidate completes 20 proper form sit-ups – OR –
    2. When 60 seconds have expired – OR –
    3. If the candidate voluntarily stops the test – OR –
    4. If the candidate stays in the starting position (down) for three (3) seconds or more.
  7. Record the number of proper form sit-ups completed on the score sheet and allow the three (3) minute rest period.

Sit-Ups that SHOULD NOT be COUNTED:

  1. Buttocks raised off the floor
  2. Arms/hands are used to get up from the down position to the up position
  3. If the candidate fails to touch the knees or break the plane of the knees
  4. The shoulder blades do not touch the mat.

2. Push-ups

Protocol:

  1. Explain that this is a timed test, requiring the candidate to complete twelve (12) proper form push-ups in sixty (60) seconds. The depth of the push-up will be measured by using a 4” or 5” high foam block. If needed, a candidate may rest in the up position only, but the time continues.
  2. The candidate will start in the “up position” with elbows straight and hands spaced shoulder width apart, with the thumbs aligned with the crease of the shoulder. The body must be kept in a straight line with the feet no more than 8 to 12 inches apart. Once the candidate is in the “up position,” place the 4” or 5” foam block directly below the sternum/chest and hold it in position throughout the entire test.
  3. Keeping the body straight the candidate will drop down until the sternum/chest touches the foam block. Then maintaining a straight body, the candidate will push up until the elbows are straight. This completes one proper form push-up.
  4. Count proper form push-ups aloud as each are completed, and inform the candidate immediately if any push-ups are performed improperly. At the end of 60 seconds, the audio will inform the candidate to stop.
  5. The Push-Up Test shall be stopped:
    1. When the candidate completes 12 proper form push-ups – OR –
    2. When 60 seconds have expired – OR –
    3. If the candidate voluntarily stops the test – OR –
    4. If the candidates knees touch the ground.
  6. Record the number of proper form push-ups completed on the score sheet and allow the three (3) minute rest period.

Push-Ups that SHOULD NOT be COUNTED:

  1. Sagging back
  2. Raised buttocks
  3. Feet spread wide apart
  4. ˝ push-ups, where the applicant fails to touch the foam block or come all the way until elbows are locked

3. Step Test

Protocol:

  1. Explain that this is a timed test, requiring the applicant to remain in cadence with the audio provided for 5-minutes.
  2. Make sure to step with the applicant during the recorded practice phase of the audio.
  3. Before beginning, ensure that the applicant can hear the audio.
  4. Start the stopwatch on the cue from the audio and stop when the test is ended.
  5. The Step Test will stop:
    1. If the candidate is unable to maintain cadence in accordance with the audio for three (3) consecutive sequences – OR –
    2. If the candidate is unable to maintain cadence in accordance with the audio for a total of six (6) sequences within the 5 minute test – OR –
    3. If the candidate uses their hands/arms to push on their legs to assist in stepping – OR –
    4. If the candidate voluntarily stops the test
    5. The Test Administrator feels that the candidate is posing a health risk to themselves (i.e. dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, severe shortness of breath, or complaint of chest pain).
    6. Record the time that the test was stopped and whether the candidate passed or failed on the score sheet. If the candidate does not complete the full 5 minute step test in cadence, record the time the test was stopped on the score sheet, and record the reason for stopping the test on the “Statement Regarding the Customs and Border Protection Officer Fitness Test Failure” form.
